04/01/2012

Whilst corporate sustainability efforts traditionally have been motivated by public relations, increasing pressure from other stakeholders are setting the stage for significant shifts.

The Fast Company, a magazine that claims to “to inspire readers and users to think beyond traditional boundaries, lead conversations, and create the future of business” recently posted an article about the top corporate sustainability trends to watch in 2012.

Whilst corporate sustainability efforts traditionally have been motivated by public relations, increasing pressure from other stakeholders are setting the stage for significant shifts.  The top trends to watch in 2012 are:

  • More organisations are including indirect emissions (i.e. scope 3) in their carbon footprints: indirect emissions typically account for more than 80% of an organisation’s footprints.
  • Wider employee engagement in corporate sustainability initiatives.
  • Focus on water use, which reflects a shift towards recognising that climate change is a reality and that its time to start managing its effects.
  • More sophisticated use of data systems to support sustainability initiatives.
